Various elements of the calcium regulatory system are shown. Many of the relationships between the various parts are still undefined and some have been redefined in recent years.  Of particular importance is the negative feedback control loop at the top center of the figure.  This is characteristic of many biological control systems.  A similarly complex control mechanism may be involved in the regulation of magnesium ions.
